A city is a relatively large and permanent settlement, particularly a large urban settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law. For example, an article of incorporation approved by the local state legislature distinguishes a city government from a town in Massachusetts. In the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth of Nations, a city is traditionally a settlement with a royal charter. Historically, in Europe, a city was understood to be an urban settlement with a cathedral, hence the official status of St David's as a city in the United Kingdom despite its population of 1,797 in 2001.

Cities generally have advanced systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process. A big city, or metropolis, usually has associated suburbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban sprawl, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers of employment. Once a city sprawls far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis.

If I work in one city and live in another, do I have to pay city taxes for both cities?
Q. I work at a school in a city that has city taxes. The taxes are automatically deducted from my paycheck. I live in another city. That city has city taxes as well. Do I have to pay city taxes in the city I work in AND the city I live in or just the city I live in? OOPS. The two cities are Battle Creek, MI and Lansing, MI.

A. City taxes are an East Coast phenomenon. You'll have to look at the laws, but you'll generally find that the city where you live is taxing you regardless of where you work; and the city where you work is taxing you because you work there (albeit at a lower rate than someone lives and works there). Surprise, Battlecreek gives a credit for city taxes paid to another city. So does Lansing. So you file a non-resident form in city you work in and you file a resident form in the city you live in taking a credit for the amount paid on the non-resident return.

What city can you recommend to me for a vacation this summer?
Q. My family wants to go on vacation this year, but not to the typical island. They want to go to a city this year, where there is great shopping (my mom wants shopping that is open 24/7 LOL), alot of things to do, something of a new culture and a lot of energy.. We don't mind hot weather so that is not a problem. What city can you recommend for us?

A. Well, here are my favorites from when I visited them: 1. Trier. This is my number one favorite city. Why? Let's see: A. It's the oldest city in Germany. With ruins dating back to the 1st and 2nd century A.D., it's fascinating. B. The people are super friendly. C. The food is excellent. D. The churches, some of which date back to Roman times. Most notable (and one of my favorites) is the Trier Cathedral. I also love St. Paulin's, though it's not that "old" by German standards. I think it was completed in 1732. The ceiling painting is STUNNING. I was literally speechless when we entered the sanctuary. 2. Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This city is incredible, or at least, the old part is. Much of it is preserved to look exactly as… [cont.]
