Q. why these particular endings? why not .aaa .aab .aac ... .zzy .zzz? and why specifically www.or nothing why not ww. or w. I know that http means hyper text transfer protocol and ftp means file transfer protocol. are there any other protocols? or things that would go before ://?

A. Originally, when DNS was being designed, .com was for commercial entities, .net was for network providers and .org as for non-profit organizations. These are called top level domains (or TLDs.) There were three other original TLDs, .gov (government]), .edu (schools, universities) and .mil (military). They've since added many more, .tv, .biz, .name, .info, as well as a boat-load of country-specific designations. The only ones that actually still mean anything are .gov/.edu/.mil, you have prove you qualify to register a domain under any of those..
