Why does my computer tell me there is a network cable unplugged?
Q. Ok so I have a computer and am using a modem from my local cable company for my internet. I can get online briefly and then it tells me there is a network cable unplugged and kicks me off line, even though it is all plugged in correctly. I have tried two different ethernet cords and two different modems but it still does this. WHY??? Grrr

A. The ethernet jack on either your machine or the modem is faulty. Try jiggling both ends (while they are connected) to see if that makes the "not connected" message go away. If it does as I suspect you will need to have the socket repaired. Good luck!

Tivo saying the network cable unplugged?
Q. I have 2 Tivos and one of them is saying the network cable is unplugged when its not? Is there anything I can do to fix this!

A. If you have a router, cable modem, or wireless access point, unplug it, wait a moment, and then plug it back in. It may take up to a minute for your equipment to restart. Make sure your network cable is securely plugged into the ethernet port/network adapter on the back of the TiVo DVR.

How to track down "network cable unplugged" problem for USB wireless adapter?
Q. My Linksys USB wireless adapter was working fine on my Windows 2000 machine. Suddenly I'm not receiving a wireless signal. The adapter works fine on another machine and other machines are able to connect to the router wirelessly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for the adapter twice and this didn't solve anything. I've tried repairing the connection and that failed. I've gone into device manager and it says that this device is working correctly. I've unplugged the modem and router and left them off for an hour and then reconnected. I've plugged the USB wireless receiver into a different USB port and still end up with the same problem. Have rebooted more times than I can count. Any other ideas on things to try? … [cont.]

A. It may be caused by tons of reasons. But most likely... 1. your modem doesn't work 2. your router (if any) doens't work 3. you don't have internet connection 4. your usb network card doesn't work if you are sure you have internet connection, try to reset your modem or your router (or plug out and plug back in). It is the most typical one in my experience. If you think 1, 2, 3 are not the cause, then 4 might be the reason. Try that usb network card at another computer.

A network cable has been unplugged keeps popping up. How do i stop it from continually poping up?
Q. Whenever I turn off my router and leave the computer on, the "A network cable has been unplugged" message keeps popping up. I don't mind it popping up once, and would rather not disable it completely, but it gets very annoying every minute or so when it pops up again and again. How can it stop it from continuously popping up, but without completely disabling the alerts or disabling the adapter?

Why does my computer keep telling me a LAN network cable is unplugged when I have wireless internet?
Q. My computer keeps freezing every few seconds when I try to watch video clips (driving me CRAZY!) When I diagnose the problem it tells me a LAN cable is unplugged. The thing is, I have wireless internet and thus a wireless router and don't have any cables at all. Any suggestions?

A. This problem is most likely a problem either with your router, or you simply have a bad connection. When Windows Vista says that an LAN cable is unplugged, it means from the router, and not your computer. This may mean that it isn't properly secured or dust is collecting in the connection hold on the router. Windows isn't all knowing and this is its best guess, there is always the possiblilty you just have a less than adequete router and/or internet connection.

A. There are two ways to connect to a wireless router. 1) Plug a cable between the router and vomputer 2) Connect to the router wirelessly To connect wirelessly you need to first have the wireless radio on the router turned on and a SSID set. Then you open your wireless adapter window on your computer and select the name (SSID) of your wireless router.

Asked by Brady - Sun Jan 11 17:38:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Check the physical connection of the ethernet cable. Plug the ethernet cable on a different port if you are using a router. If its connected to a modem try uplugging and replugging the ethernet cable. Check the LAN. Right click, try to disabling and enabling. Check the status. If its connected, check for ip address. If it the ip from the modem. Then you should be able to get on the internet. If its still network cable unplug, last step you can do is hard reset the modem or router and then restart your computer. If it is still network cable unplugged. It could be that the problem is on the ethernet cable or the NIC or ethernet card where the cable is connected to.

Q. one day before my LAN cable was working, but from next day when i start my computer it is showing that network cable is unplugged. When I use the same cable in another computer it is showing same (network cable is unplugged), but another computer's LAN cable is working fine in my computer After that I changed LAN card but it is showing same(network cable is unplugged), then I cut the cable and crimp it again on both side, but still showing same problem(network cable is unplugged). Can anyone help me?
Asked by pankaj - Thu Mar 4 10:39:13 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you tested the working LAN cable, was it plugged into the same port that you're having trouble with with the bad LAN cable, or another port? Perhaps one of the switch ports is bad? If not, then it could just be a bad crimp again - you should invest in a LAN cable tester, or even just a continuity tester.

However everytime I connect to any active network port, it says cable unplugged. Any ideas.

network cable unplugged and wireless network connection not connected?
Q. I'm using Hawking HWR54G Hi-Speed Wireless-G Router Revision M. There's a CardBus PC Card that goes along with it. My desktop computer is connected to the router and it works fine. I'm trying to set up the laptop but it says "Network cable unplugged" and "Wireless Network Connection 5" (card) not connected. It's worked before, but at that time, someone configured the router and stuff for me. Recently the laptop was erased (don't know if that means anything) and now I have it back and I can't get the internet to work on it =(
Asked by hello - Sat Jun 23 19:58:05 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Apparently the laptop was reformatted. When this happened the wireless configuration was erased. The wireless router and the notebook's wireless must be configured in the same way to communicate. You must check the configuration set up on the router and set up the same on the notebook. This includes encryption, preshared key, MAC address validation, etc. If you do not know how to do this, you will likely need help beyond what this column can do. Also when you communicate to the router, be sure to use a wired connecction.
